Know what is private and what you share

Private by default

Briefs, conversations, manuscripts, sources, covers, and exports live inside your personal account until you choose a sharing action. Requested generation sends the material needed for that action to AI providers. Read the current Privacy Policy for the legal detail and subprocessors, and the Terms for your responsibilities.

When you create your account, Chapbook records once where the visit came from: the campaign tags on the link you followed, a referral code, the domain of the site that sent you, and the first chapbook.ink page you opened. It keeps the referring site’s domain only, never the full address. When the code is another author’s referral link, that author sees only how many accounts were made through it and how many paid, never whose. When that author is an affiliate, the payments the account makes in the year from its first one are added up to work out the affiliate’s commission; the affiliate is paid a total and never told whose payments it included.

If you answer the Library’s one question about how Chapbook is working for you, the rating and any quote stay private to Chapbook unless you tick the permission box. With it, Chapbook may publish the quote with the name and role you gave, never your email address, and records the exact permission and when you gave it. You can withdraw it on your Author profile.

Feedback link versus public page

A feedback link reads the live manuscript; a public page reads a publish-time snapshot and its clean PDF. Both hide your email, notes, raw sources, account settings, and other projects.

Feedback links are revocable and not for search indexing. Public-page indexing is your choice and starts off.

Reader information

A public-page sign-up creates or updates one reader record for the author. It contains an unconfirmed email and the consent attached to the sign-up. Chapbook may record view, sign-up, read, download, and return events using a signed reader cookie. You can add tags and notes and export the list as CSV.

If you connect Kit, Mailchimp, Beehiiv, MailerLite or a webhook under Readers, each new reader’s email, first name, book, page link and consent go there once, shortly after they sign up. Chapbook keeps each API key, Kit or Mailchimp access token and webhook secret encrypted. Deleting a reader in Chapbook does not delete them in your email tool or anywhere your webhook sent them.

Chapbook never emails readers; your email tool sends its own confirmation. It emails you, the author: account messages, and the writing tips and weekly page digest you can turn off on your Author profile or from any of those emails.

Deletion and recovery

A book moved to trash is retained for 30 days before its chapters, sources, covers, and exports are purged. Readers can be permanently deleted from Readers.

Share safely

Treat a feedback URL as a secret and remove sensitive personal data before sending text to an AI action or publishing it. Check every source and generated claim before release.
