KDP’s two royalty bands

BandList pricePays, per sale
70% $2.99 to $12.99, and at least 20% below any print edition’s price 70% of the list price less $0.15 per MB to deliver, at least $0.01
35% From $0.99 (under 3 mb), $1.99 (under 10 mb), $2.99 (larger) up to $200.00 35% of the list price, with no delivery cost

How it works it out

The calculator uses the same arithmetic as the KDP listing in Chapbook. In the 70% band, a sale pays 70% of the list price after the delivery cost, which is $0.15 for every megabyte of the file. In the 35% band, a sale pays 35% of the list price and nothing is taken for delivery, but the lowest price allowed rises with the file’s size. When the price is in both bands, it shows which pays more.

KDP works out the delivery cost from the file it makes from yours when you upload. A book of text is small; pictures make it larger. Chapbook’s own sample EPUB is the starting size, so change it to your file’s.

What it leaves out

Only Amazon.com, in US dollars. KDP sets further conditions for the 70% band, including where a sale is made, so read its pricing pages before you set a price. Chapbook checked them on the date at the top of this page.
