AI-assisted vs AI-generated: what is the difference?
On Amazon KDP, AI-generated content is text, images or translations an AI tool created, even if you edited them heavily afterwards. AI-assisted content is what you created yourself and improved, checked or brainstormed with an AI tool. KDP asks you to declare the first, not the second.
What it means in practice
The line is who created the content, not how much you changed it afterwards. Brainstorming with an AI tool and then writing the text yourself is AI-assisted. Having a tool write a chapter and then editing it heavily is AI-generated, in KDP’s terms.
KDP’s question covers text, images and translations, and AI-generated images include the cover and interior art. Whichever answer applies, KDP holds you responsible for checking that all the content follows its guidelines, including intellectual property rights.
These are KDP’s definitions. Other stores may draw the line elsewhere, so check their rules when you publish there.
How Chapbook uses it
Chapbook doesn’t answer for you. Under AI-generated content in the KDP listing, it shows what your book’s history records, such as the share of the final words you wrote or rewrote by hand, beside KDP’s definitions in KDP’s own words.
The free AI-generated or AI-assisted helper puts your answers on one side of KDP’s line or the other, and our guide to KDP’s AI disclosure goes through the question itself. By that line, the sample on this page is AI-generated: its caption says it was generated from one brief and exported unedited.

Questions people ask
Does heavy editing make AI text AI-assisted?
Not by KDP's definition. KDP says content an AI-based tool created counts as AI-generated, “even if you applied substantial edits afterwards”.
Is a book drafted in Chapbook AI-generated?
Chapters Chapbook drafts from your brief are created by an AI tool, which KDP's definition calls AI-generated even after substantial edits. Chapbook's KDP listing shows how much of the final text you wrote or rewrote by hand; the answer is yours.
Is this page legal advice?
No. It reports KDP's published definitions as checked on 30 October 2026. KDP's own page decides and can change, so read it before you publish.
