# Words to pages calculator: how many pages is 5,000 words?

5,000 words fills about 22 pages as a lead magnet on US Letter and about 24 as a nonfiction book on a 6 × 9 in page, cover and front matter included. The calculator works it out for any length, kind, page size and look, from the pages Chapbook's sample books actually came out at.

## Pages at a glance

| Words | Lead magnet, US Letter, Editorial look | Nonfiction book, 6 × 9 in, Editorial look |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | about 8 pages | about 8 pages |
| 2,500 | about 13 pages | about 14 pages |
| 5,000 | about 22 pages | about 24 pages |
| 10,000 | about 39 pages | about 44 pages |
| 20,000 | about 74 pages | about 84 pages |
| 40,000 | about 144 pages | about 163 pages |

## Measured from the sample books

Every estimate comes from these books' exported PDFs: their words, their pages, and which pages are the cover and front matter. Words per page counts only the pages after the front matter.

| Sample | Kind | Page size | Look | Words | PDF pages | Words per page of text |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Five Pricing Mistakes | Lead magnet | US Letter | Editorial | 3,735 | 17 | 287 |
| World Book Day | Brochure | US Letter | Warm | 612 | 6 | 122 |
| Find Your First 100 Readers | Workbook | US Letter | Editorial | 5,850 | 24 | 293 |
| The Pricing Playbook | Nonfiction book | 6 × 9 in | Editorial | 9,862 | 43 | 253 |
| The Welcome Sequence | Lead magnet | US Letter | Modern | 3,626 | 17 | 279 |
| Slow Money | Nonfiction book | 6 × 9 in | Classic | 9,273 | 37 | 281 |
| The First Harvest | Workbook | US Letter | Modern | 5,175 | 20 | 323 |

An estimate adds the kind's front matter (the cover, and for most kinds a title page, copyright and contents) to the words divided by the pooled words per page of the closest samples: the same page size, then the same kind and look, the same kind, the same look, or any look. A4 has no sample and is set like US Letter, so it uses Letter's measurement.

## How the estimate is made

Every Chapbook sample book was written from one brief and exported through the same typesetting the app uses. Each one's PDF says how many pages it came out at, and which of them are the cover, title page, copyright and contents. What is left is its pages of text, and its words divided by those pages is its words per page.

The calculator takes the samples closest to what you pick: the same page size first, then the same kind and look, the same kind, the same look, or any look. It pools their words and pages, divides your words by the result, rounds up, and adds the front matter your kind of book has. It tells you which samples it used, so you can judge how close they are to your book.

## What it does not count

Pictures take room: a kind of book that carries them, such as a brochure, is measured only on samples that have them. Chapter openers matter too: each chapter starts a new page, so a book of many short chapters runs a little longer than the estimate. An EPUB has no fixed pages at all; this is the PDF's count.

## Made with Chapbook: Find Your First 100 Readers

Find Your First 100 Readers: A 30-day workbook, by Maya Chen. Workbook, 5,850 words, 24 pages. A sample generated from one brief and exported unedited; it is not a customer's book. Read every page: https://chapbook.ink/examples/workbook/

The brief:

> A 30-day plan to find the first hundred readers for a nonfiction book without paid advertising. Promise: By day 30 you will have a named reader, a one-sentence promise, a short list of places that reader already gathers, and either your first hundred readers or a routine that keeps adding them. Reader: Someone who wrote the book on evenings and weekends, dislikes self-promotion, and has fewer than two hundred followers anywhere. Voice: Second person, a coach at the kitchen table; a short lesson, then a fill-in exercise; checklists at the end of each week; no invented statistics.

The outline the planner proposed:

1. How to Use This Workbook (466 words)
2. Week 1: Your Reader (1,142 words)
3. Week 2: Your Promise and Your Page (1,168 words)
4. Week 3: Where Your Readers Already Gather (1,294 words)
5. Week 4: Ask, Deliver, Repeat (1,200 words)
6. Day 30: The Review and the Routine (545 words)

### Does an EPUB have a page count?

Not a fixed one. An EPUB reflows to the reader's screen and type size, so its pages change from device to device. A page count belongs to the PDF or a print layout.

### Why does the look change the page count?

Each look sets its own typeface and type size, and some indent paragraphs where others space them, so the same words fill a different number of pages.
