# AI-generated or AI-assisted? A KDP AI disclosure helper

KDP asks you to declare AI-generated content: text, images or translations an AI tool created, even if you edited them heavily afterwards. Content you created yourself and only improved or brainstormed with AI is AI-assisted, and KDP does not ask you to declare it. The helper matches your answers to KDP's own wording; it is not legal advice.

## KDP's definitions, quoted

From KDP's [Content Guidelines](https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G200672390), section "Artificial intelligence (AI) content (text, images, or translations)", as read on 29 October 2026:

> We require you to inform us of AI-generated content (text, images, or translations) when you publish a new book or make edits to and republish an existing book through KDP. AI-generated images include cover and interior images and artwork. You are not required to disclose AI-assisted content.

> AI-generated: We define AI-generated content as text, images, or translations created by an AI-based tool. If you used an AI-based tool to create the actual content (whether text, images, or translations), it is considered “AI-generated,” even if you applied substantial edits afterwards.

> AI-assisted: If you created the content yourself, and used AI-based tools to edit, refine, error-check, or otherwise improve that content (whether text or images), then it is considered “AI-assisted” and not “AI-generated.” Similarly, if you used an AI-based tool to brainstorm and generate ideas, but ultimately created the text or images yourself, this is also considered “AI-assisted” and not “AI-generated.” It is not necessary to inform us of the use of such tools or processes.

> You are responsible for verifying that all AI-generated and/or AI-assisted content adheres to all content guidelines, including by complying with all applicable intellectual property rights.

## How the helper places an answer

It asks the same question for the text, the images (cover and interior) and any translation.

- **AI-generated, which KDP asks you to declare:** “An AI tool created it, even if I edited it afterwards”.

- **AI-assisted, which KDP does not ask you to declare:** “I made it, then used AI to edit, refine, error-check or improve it”, “I used AI to brainstorm ideas, then made it myself”.

- **Neither:** “I made it myself, with no AI tool”.

For a book made in Chapbook: chapters Chapbook drafted from your brief were created by an AI tool; text you wrote yourself and brought in with “I have a draft” was not. The KDP listing on Chapbook’s Launch page shows what the book’s history records, how much of the final text you wrote or rewrote by hand, beside KDP’s definitions. Which answer fits your book is yours to decide.

This helper is not legal advice. It matches your answers to KDP’s wording; KDP’s own page decides, and it can change.

## How the helper reads your answers

KDP asks one question when you publish: whether the book contains AI-generated text, images or translations. Its Content Guidelines draw the line between two kinds of AI use. What an AI tool created counts as AI-generated however much you edited it afterwards. What you created yourself counts as AI-assisted, even if an AI tool helped you edit, check or brainstorm it.

The helper asks how each kind of content in your book was made, in the terms KDP's definitions turn on, and puts each answer on one side of that line. Any AI-generated content makes the book one to declare. Its reading of each answer is shown beside KDP's own words, so you can check it.

## What it cannot decide for you

A book often mixes the two, chapter by chapter or image by image, and only you know how each part was made. When an answer is not clear, read KDP's page, and when in doubt, ask KDP. The helper is not legal advice.

## Made with Chapbook: The Welcome Sequence

The Welcome Sequence: Seven emails that turn a subscriber into a reader, by Dana Okafor. Lead magnet, 3,626 words, 17 pages. A sample generated from one brief and exported unedited; it is not a customer's book. Read every page: https://chapbook.ink/examples/newsletter/

The brief:

> A seven-email welcome sequence for a new newsletter: what each email does, what to write, and when to send it. Promise: By the end you have a complete seven-email welcome sequence drafted, with a send schedule. Reader: Someone with fewer than a thousand subscribers who writes the newsletter themselves. Voice: Second person, warm and direct, worked examples with fictional newsletters, no invented open-rate statistics.

The outline the planner proposed:

1. Introduction (282 words)
2. Email 1: The one they actually open (681 words)
3. Emails 2 and 3: Who you are and what to expect (729 words)
4. Emails 4 and 5: Your best two pieces, reframed (669 words)
5. Emails 6 and 7: The ask, and the door left open (743 words)
6. The schedule and the template (478 words)
