# Lead magnet ideas for local shops

A local shop’s lead magnet should give a neighbor a reason to come in and a way to hear from you: a brochure for your next event, a care guide for what you sell, a gift guide for the holidays. Here are ten briefs that open in Chapbook, and one sample expanded above as the outline the planner proposed for a day of events at a bookshop.

## Made with Chapbook: World Book Day

World Book Day: A day of reading at Larkspur Books, by Larkspur Books. Brochure, 612 words, 6 pages. A sample generated from one brief and exported unedited; it is not a customer's book. Read every page: https://chapbook.ink/examples/bookshop/

The brief:

> World Book Day at a twenty-year-old independent bookshop: morning readings, an afternoon binding workshop and an open evening. Promise: Know what is on, when, and where to find the shop. Reader: Someone who lives nearby, knows the shop by sight, and has never been to one of its events. Voice: First person plural, the shop speaking; short, friendly sections; a fictional shop, street and readers.

The outline the planner proposed:

1. Start the Day with a Story (116 words)
2. Make a Book to Keep (137 words)
3. Twenty Years on Wren Street (118 words)
4. Stay for the Open Evening (128 words)
5. Find Us and Join Us (87 words)

## 10 ideas

1. **A brochure for your next event** (Brochure). A shop event needs something a neighbor can pick up, keep and hand to a friend. World Book Day, expanded above, is this idea as a sample for a fictional bookshop’s day of readings.
Brief: World Book Day at a twenty-year-old independent bookshop: morning readings, an afternoon binding workshop and an open evening. Promise: Know what is on, when, and where to find the shop. Reader: Someone who lives nearby, knows the shop by sight, and has never been to one of its events. Voice: First person plural, the shop speaking; short, friendly sections; a fictional shop, street and readers.

2. **The care guide for what you sell** (Lead magnet). Someone who has just bought a good knife, a houseplant or a pair of boots wants to look after it. A care guide adds value after the sale, and it’s a natural reason for them to give you an email address.
Brief: A short care guide from an independent plant shop for looking after houseplants at home: light, watering, repotting, common problems, and what to do while on vacation, with a note on bringing a sick plant in to us. Use only my own care notes. Reader: someone who bought their first plant from us and has killed two before. Voice: friendly and frank, first person plural, no invented statistics.

3. **A beginner’s project from your shelves** (Workbook). A hobby shop’s best customers are made, not found. A workbook for a first project gets a beginner started, and sends them back to you each time they run out of yarn or need a new tool.
Brief: A workbook for knitting a first scarf, from a neighborhood yarn shop: choosing yarn, casting on, the knit stitch, fixing mistakes and finishing, with a short lesson and a page to note progress each week. Reader: a complete beginner who walked into the shop because the window looked nice. Voice: second person, patient and encouraging, first person plural when the shop speaks. I will check every step and use my own photos.

4. **How to build a cheese board, in pictures** (Illustrated guide). A specialty shop sells knowledge along with products, and customers ask the same question at the counter every week. An illustrated guide answers it at home and gives them a reason to come back for the next one.
Brief: An illustrated guide to putting together a cheese board, from a neighborhood cheese shop: choosing three or four cheeses, how much to buy, what goes with them, how to cut and serve, and how to store what is left, one picture per step, with something to try at the end of each section. Reader: someone hosting friends on Saturday who is afraid of asking at the counter. Voice: warm and unfussy, no invented awards or prices.

5. **The holiday gift guide** (Collection). People want to buy locally for the holidays and can’t always get to you to browse. A guide built from your shelves lets them shop from the couch and walk in knowing what they want.
Brief: A collection of sixteen gifts from an independent gift and stationery shop, grouped by person: for a host, a teacher, a teenager and someone who has everything. Each entry has a fact list (price, who it suits, where it is made, when it is in stock), then a short paragraph. Use only the products, prices and facts I supply. Reader: a neighbor who wants to buy locally and has no ideas. Voice: warm and funny, first person plural.

6. **A guide to your neighborhood** (Collection). Being known as the shop that knows the street is hard for an online store to copy. A guide to the places nearby also gives your neighbors a reason to share it, and the other shops a reason to stock it.
Brief: A collection of twelve favorite places on our shopping street and nearby, grouped into coffee and food, shops, and places to sit. Each entry has a fact list (address, hours, what to get), then a short paragraph in our words. Use only what I supply, and I will check each with its owner. Reader: a visitor or a new neighbor. Voice: warm, local and a little opinionated, first person plural, no invented reviews.

7. **A booklet for your repair or custom service** (Brochure). Many customers don’t know that you fix things or make them to order. A short booklet by the register tells them how it works, and gives them something to pass on to a friend who needs it.
Brief: A short booklet on the repair service at an independent bicycle shop: what we fix, how booking works, how long it usually takes as I state it, how we quote before we start, and how to reach us. Use only the details and prices I supply. Reader: someone with a bike in the garage who has not ridden it in years. Voice: friendly and plain, first person plural, no promised turnaround times and no testimonials.

8. **A monthly shop note** (Newsletter). A shop’s regulars like hearing what’s just arrived before anyone else does. A short designed issue gives them that, and it’s a reason to walk over that an email with a discount code doesn’t give.
Brief: A monthly newsletter issue from an independent record shop: what just came in, a staff pick, a short piece on a local band, the date of our next in-store event, and our hours. Use only the facts I supply. Reader: a regular who comes in on Saturdays and some who have moved away. Voice: brief, enthusiastic and a little nerdy, first person plural.

9. **A kids’ table pack for your Saturday** (Activity pack). A toy shop or bookshop with families in on Saturdays needs something for the small table in the corner. A printable pack keeps children busy for a while, and parents can ask for the whole pack themselves.
Brief: A free printable activity pack from an independent children's bookshop, about a town where the animals run the shops. Eight coloring pages, two word searches, two mazes and two worksheets ("design your own shop", "a book I want to read"), for ages 6 to 8. Every character is our own, and the sign-up is for parents and guardians, never children. Reader: the parent or guardian who picks it up at the shop or prints it at home. Voice: playful and warm, with a short note for the grown-up.

10. **The story of the shop** (Nonfiction book). A shop with decades behind it has a story its neighbors would read, and an anniversary is a good reason to tell it. It makes a fine thing to sell at the counter or give to your longest customers.
Brief: A short book on forty years of a family hardware store: how it started, the people who worked there, what the street was like, the near-closures and what we learned about keeping a small shop alive. Use only my family's notes and the interviews I upload, and quote only people who have agreed. Reader: a long-time customer and a neighbor who wonders how the place survives. Voice: warm and funny first person, no invented dates or figures.

## How to choose one

Listen to what people ask at the counter. If it’s how to look after something, write the care guide. If it’s what to buy for someone else, make the gift guide. If your window draws people who don’t yet do what you sell, make a first project. Print a stack for the counter either way, because the people already in your shop are the easiest ones to reach.

Use your own shop’s real details, and add your own photos wherever a real place or product is shown. A generated picture is fine for a watercolor of a stack of books, but not for the actual chair you are selling. For a longer look at a small business’s story, [Slow Money](/examples/bakery/) is a sample about a fictional family bakery, and it isn’t a customer’s book.

## What the sample shows

World Book Day is a sample brochure, not a customer’s. The shop, the street and the readers are invented. The outline above is the one the planner proposed from its brief, and you can read the booklet it became.

## Every brief here opens in Chapbook

Each idea comes with the paragraph Chapbook needs to start: the topic, the reader and the voice. Open one, put in your own shop, your own street and your real dates, and Chapbook proposes titles and an outline for you to approve before anything is drafted.

## Questions

### What is a good lead magnet for a local shop?

One that helps someone use what you sell or gives them a reason to visit, such as a care guide, a first project, or a brochure for your next event. A neighbor can use it the same day, and it gives them a reason to come back.

### How do I get it into people’s hands in the shop?

Print copies for the counter, and on a paid plan use the book page’s QR code on a sign by the register. Sign-ups land in your Readers list, and from there you can export each sign-up as a CSV for your email tool.

### Will Chapbook get my address, hours and prices right?

Give the assistant your real details and it saves them as facts a brochure must carry word for word. Drafting is told never to invent a detail of that kind, but check the last page before you print, since you’re the one who knows.
