# Lead magnet ideas for interior designers

An interior designer’s lead magnet should help someone before they buy the wrong thing: the order of decisions in a room, how to measure it, how a design project and its fees work. Here are ten briefs that open in Chapbook as starting points, each with its reader and voice, ready for your own rooms, process and fees.

## A brief to start from

> A short guide to the order of decisions in a living room: how the room is used, the traffic paths, the rug size, the seating plan, then the sofa, with lighting and paint last and why. Reader: a homeowner about to buy a sofa because the old one finally gave out. Voice: a frank designer talking at the kitchen table, second person, no trend talk.

## 10 ideas

1. **The decisions to make before you buy a sofa** (Lead magnet). The first big purchase sets the size and color of everything after it. A guide to the right order catches someone with a sofa in their online cart, when your judgment is worth the most to them.
Brief: A short guide to the order of decisions in a living room: how the room is used, the traffic paths, the rug size, the seating plan, then the sofa, with lighting and paint last and why. Reader: a homeowner about to buy a sofa because the old one finally gave out. Voice: a frank designer talking at the kitchen table, second person, no trend talk.

2. **What hiring an interior designer involves** (Lead magnet). People put off the call because they can’t picture the process or the bill. Laying out the stages and how fees work answers the questions they’re too shy to ask you in a first email.
Brief: A plain guide to working with an interior designer: the first consultation, concept boards, the furniture and finishes schedule, ordering, lead times and installation day, and how flat, hourly and cost-plus fees differ, with my own fee approach taken only from the notes I supply. Reader: a couple renovating for the first time who have never hired a designer. Voice: warm and exact, no invented prices.

3. **The measure-your-room workbook** (Workbook). A sofa that won’t fit up the stairs is an expensive way to learn about measuring. A fill-in workbook is useful even if they never call, and it means they arrive at your first meeting with the numbers you need.
Brief: A workbook for measuring a room before buying anything: sketching a floor plan, window and sill heights, door swings, outlets and vents, ceiling height, and the delivery path through stairwells and elevators, with a fill-in page for each room. Reader: a homeowner who has already sent back one sofa that would not fit up the stairs. Voice: second person, patient, a short lesson and then a page to fill in.

4. **An illustrated guide to layering light** (Illustrated guide). People can feel that a room is wrong without knowing that the lighting is why. One picture per idea shows the difference better than a paragraph, and shows how you think.
Brief: An illustrated guide to lighting a home in layers: ambient, task and accent light, color temperature, dimmers, lamp height beside a sofa or bed, and what to fix first in a dark room, with something to try at the end of each section. Reader: a homeowner whose living room feels flat at night despite a big ceiling fixture. Voice: friendly and exact, one picture per idea.

5. **A fabric guide for homes with dogs and kids** (Collection). Anyone with a muddy dog worries about upholstery. A reference of fabrics in one repeating shape is one to keep and look up, and every entry is a small proof that you know materials.
Brief: A collection of twelve upholstery and rug materials for busy homes, grouped into sofas, dining chairs and floors. Each entry has a fact list (what it is, how it wears, how it cleans, where to avoid it), then a short paragraph from experience. Use only the materials and notes I supply, and invent no test figures. Reader: a parent with two kids and a large dog who wants a nice room anyway. Voice: practical and a little funny.

6. **A booklet for after the first consultation** (Brochure). Prospects often need to explain you to a spouse or partner who wasn’t in the room. A short booklet on how you work does that for you and keeps your name on the kitchen counter.
Brief: A short booklet to leave after a first consultation with a residential design studio: how we work, what happens in each stage, what we need from the client, how decisions get made, and how to reach us. Use only the studio details I supply. Reader: the partner who was not at the meeting and has questions. Voice: warm and specific, first person plural, no testimonials.

7. **A seasonal note from the studio** (Newsletter). Design projects can take a long time to come back around. A short issue with one solved room problem keeps past inquiries thinking of you until they’re ready to start.
Brief: A seasonal newsletter issue from a small design studio: one room problem and how to solve it, one material explained, one sourcing note about lead times, a reader's question, and what the studio has open next season. Use only the facts I supply. Reader: someone who inquired last year and has not started their project. Voice: brief, friendly and unhurried.

8. **The renter’s room plan** (Lead magnet). Renters buy furniture too, and they worry about their deposits. A guide for them reaches people a renovation-focused site doesn’t, and some will one day own a home and need a designer.
Brief: A guide to making a rented home feel designed without losing the deposit: furniture that moves with you, lighting you can plug in, removable options for walls and floors, window treatments, and what to ask a landlord first, saying that lease terms vary. Reader: a thirty-something in a long-term rental with white walls and beige carpet. Voice: encouraging and practical, no shopping lists of brands.

9. **A prep sheet for real-estate agents** (Lead magnet). Agents meet people at the moment they’re about to change homes, which makes them good referrers. Something useful to hand their sellers gives them a reason to mention your name.
Brief: A room-by-room guide for preparing a lived-in home for photos and showings: what to remove, what to move, simple fixes to light and color, and what not to spend money on, written so an agent can hand it to sellers. Reader: a seller with three weeks before the listing goes live. Voice: calm, brisk, a one-line reason for each step, and no promise about sale price or speed.

10. **Your book on small homes** (Nonfiction book). A longer book on one specialty gives press, podcasts and referrers something to point to. It shows your way of thinking in a depth a portfolio page never can.
Brief: A practical book on designing a small home so it works for real life: planning for one room doing three jobs, storage, scale, light, color and living with what you own, with composite fictional homes labeled as such. Reader: a couple in a small city apartment who have stopped having people over. Voice: thoughtful first person, concrete and unfussy, no invented statistics.

## How to choose one

Look at what comes up in your first calls. If people apologize for not knowing how this works, write the guide to hiring a designer. If they show you a sofa they have already ordered, write the order of decisions. If you get most of your work through agents and builders, start with something those referrers can hand on.

Use your own rooms wherever you can. A generated picture is fine for showing an idea about light or layout, but a project you completed should appear only in your own photos, and with the client’s permission if it is their home.

## Every brief here opens in Chapbook

Each idea comes with the paragraph Chapbook needs to start: the topic, the reader and the voice. The brief at the top of this page is a starting point, not a book we have already made from it. Open it, change the room and the reader to the clients you want more of, and add your notes as sources. Chapbook then proposes titles and an outline for you to approve before anything is drafted.

## Questions

### What makes a good lead magnet for an interior designer?

One that helps someone avoid an expensive mistake in a room they are about to change, and shows how you think along the way. The order of decisions, how to measure a room and how design fees work are all good starting topics.

### Can I use photos of my own projects in the book?

Yes. The editor lets you upload a picture wherever a generated one would go, and you should for any real room. A generated picture shows the idea of a room, not your work, so never present one as a project you completed.

### How long should an interior design lead magnet be?

Long enough to help with one room decision. A Chapbook lead magnet runs 1,000 to 10,000 words, and a brochure to leave after a consultation runs 200 to 1,500.
