# Lead magnet ideas for course creators

A course creator’s lead magnet should give a beginner their first small win in your subject, so buying the course feels like the next step: a two-week starter workbook, the module people ask about most, or a check on whether they are ready. Here are ten, each a brief that opens in Chapbook, and one expanded into the outline it produced.

## Made with Chapbook: The First Harvest

The First Harvest: A two-week workbook for a balcony vegetable garden, by Tomás Herrera. Workbook, 5,175 words, 20 pages. A sample generated from one brief and exported unedited; it is not a customer's book. Read every page: https://chapbook.ink/examples/garden/

The brief:

> A fourteen-day plan to start a vegetable garden in containers on a balcony, a windowsill or a doorstep. Promise: By day 14 you will have pots that drain, seed sown at the right depth, seedlings up and thinned, a second sowing made, and a watering habit that fits your week. Reader: Someone with no garden and no experience who has killed a houseplant and concluded they cannot grow anything. Voice: Second person, a patient neighbour leaning over the balcony rail; a short lesson, then a fill-in exercise; one fictional beginner followed through the fortnight; no invented statistics, no brands, no chemicals.

The outline the planner proposed:

1. How to Use This Workbook (572 words)
2. Week 1: Light, Pots and the First Sowing (2,081 words)
3. Week 2: Water, Thinning and What Goes Wrong (2,119 words)
4. The Last Page: Your Checklist and Your Harvest Log (373 words)

## 10 ideas

1. **A two-week starter workbook** (Workbook). A beginner who gets one real result in two weeks now believes they can do this. The First Harvest, expanded on this page, is this idea for a beginner’s gardening subject, with a short lesson and an exercise each day.

2. **Am I ready for this course?** (Lead magnet). Refund requests often come from people who bought too early. A readiness check sends the right people to your course and gives the others something to do first.
Brief: A readiness check for someone considering an online course in bookkeeping for freelancers: fifteen questions on what they already do, the software and time they need, what the course will not cover, and what to do first if they are not ready. Reader: a freelancer whose receipts live in a shoebox. Voice: friendly and honest, second person, happy to say wait.

3. **The module people ask about most** (Lead magnet). Your sales page comments and DMs show which lesson people want most. Written up as a short book, it demonstrates your teaching on the exact thing they came for.
Brief: A short guide to shooting your first course video on a phone: the light, the sound, framing and the three takes that save the most editing, all in a spare room with gear under a modest budget. Reader: a subject expert about to record their first lesson who hates being on camera. Voice: encouraging and exact, step by step, no brand endorsements or invented gear prices.

4. **The glossary your students always need** (Lead magnet). Beginners are often lost in a subject’s words before they are lost in its ideas. A plain glossary gets opened again and again, and it keeps your name beside the subject.
Brief: A plain-language glossary of the sixty words a new Python learner meets in the first month, grouped by when they come up, each with a one-sentence meaning and a tiny code example. Reader: an adult career changer on their first programming course. Voice: patient and exact, no assumption of a math background, no job promises.

5. **A companion workbook for your free mini-course** (Workbook). If you run a free email course, a workbook gives it a place to live. People who fill in pages are doing the work, and the sign-up page collects the people who want to start it.
Brief: A five-day workbook that goes with a free email course on writing a first watercolor sketch every morning: one short lesson, one exercise and a page to record what happened, with a checklist of supplies at the start. Reader: a beginner who bought paints and has not opened them. Voice: gentle and specific, second person, no brand names.

6. **The common mistakes in your subject** (Lead magnet). Experienced teachers can spot a beginner’s errors before the beginner can. A short book on those mistakes shows that experience and spares your future students some of them.
Brief: A guide to the seven mistakes new Spanish learners make in their first six months, from translating word for word to avoiding speaking, each with why it happens and a ten-minute fix. Reader: an adult learner who studies with an app and freezes in conversation. Voice: warm and practical, real example sentences, no fluency-in-weeks promises.

7. **The illustrated map of what you teach** (Illustrated guide). Students rarely see how a subject fits together. A picture-led guide to the whole field helps them place themselves, and shows where your course sits within it.
Brief: An illustrated guide to the parts of a home sourdough process: starter, mix, fold, proof, shape, score and bake, one picture per stage, what can go wrong at each one and how to tell. Reader: a home baker who has made three flat loaves. Voice: friendly and exact, no brands, measurements in both grams and cups.

8. **Student work and what it teaches** (Collection). Real projects teach more than testimonials can. A collection of a few student stories, with permission, shows prospects the road from their position to where those students ended up.
Brief: A collection of five stories of students finishing their first online course project in user-experience design, each told as where they started, what they got stuck on, what they made and what they would do differently. Use only the interviews I upload, with each student's permission, and invent no quote, salary or job result. Reader: a career changer considering a design course. Voice: plain and encouraging, honest about the hard parts.

9. **A course launch brochure** (Brochure). When a cohort opens, past students and partners need something to share. A short brochure says who it is for and what each week holds, without sending people through a long sales page.
Brief: A short brochure for the next cohort of a six-week course on starting a small podcast: who it is for, what happens each week, the hours it takes, what is included and when enrollment closes. Reader: someone who has been meaning to start a podcast for two years. Voice: warm and specific, no hype, no download or earnings promises.

10. **The book behind the course** (Nonfiction book). Some people want the ideas before they commit to the videos. A full book sets out your teaching for them, and gives you something to offer podcast hosts and event organizers.
Brief: A practical book on building a first online course as a subject expert: choosing one transformation, outlining modules, recording without a studio, running a small pilot and improving it from what students actually ask. Reader: an expert with a day job who has a course idea and no audience yet. Voice: direct first person, fictional worked examples, no income claims or invented statistics.

## How to choose one

Ask what stops people from buying. If they worry they can’t do it, give them the starter workbook and a first win. If they aren’t sure the course fits, write the readiness check. If they want proof you can teach, write up the module people ask about most.

Decide what the reader will have done when they finish, in words they could say to a friend: “I shot my first lesson” or “I have a plan for my pots.” Leave out income figures and job results. You don’t know them for this reader, and the course should stand on what it teaches.

## Every brief here opens in Chapbook

Each idea comes with the paragraph Chapbook needs to start: the topic, the reader and the voice. Open one, change the subject and the student to yours, and add your lesson notes as sources. Chapbook proposes titles and an outline to approve before anything is drafted. The first idea is shown expanded: the outline the planner proposed for it, and the book it became.

## Questions

### What makes a good lead magnet for a course creator?

A first result small enough to finish in a sitting or a couple of weeks, in the same subject as the course. The reader sees that you can teach and that they can learn it from you.

### Can I turn my course material into a book without rewriting it?

Yes. “I have a draft” reads your DOCX, Markdown or text files in word for word as chapters, for no credits. If you’d rather draft fresh, add your lessons as sources and the chapters draw on them.

### How long should a course creator’s workbook be?

Long enough for the exercises to be done, not just read. A Chapbook workbook is 1,000 to 20,000 words, and you set each section’s length in the outline before anything is drafted.
